Discrimination in the workplace continues to affect countless people across the UK. But just how common is it today?
To better understand the issue, HR and payroll software provider Ciphr surveyed 4,000 UK adults to find out how many have faced workplace discrimination—either at work or during the hiring process—and which forms of discrimination are most prevalent. The most recent 2025 survey uncovered some stark findings:
- Nearly half (45%) of UK adults have experienced workplace discrimination—either on the job (38%), during the hiring process (39%), or both.
- Over two-thirds (69%) of ethnic minority respondents (excluding white minorities) reported discrimination at work (61%) or while job hunting (65%). Nearly a third (29%) believe their race or ethnicity directly impacted their chances of getting hired.
- Ageism is the most commonly reported form of discrimination. Nearly one in seven (15%) job seekers felt their age was a barrier to employment, while 8% experienced age-based discrimination at work.
- Gender discrimination remains a challenge, with women nearly twice as likely as men to report sexism in the workplace (15% vs. 8.5%).
- Non-binary individuals face even higher levels of discrimination, with nearly three-quarters (73%) experiencing workplace or hiring bias.
- Young workers (18-34 years old) are disproportionately affected, with 59% saying they’ve encountered hiring discrimination and 57% experiencing workplace discrimination—compared to just 31% of those 35 and older.
- Londoners report the highest levels of discrimination—with 57% experiencing bias at work or during hiring, well above the national average of 45%.
- Hospitality workers are among the most affected, with 75% reporting workplace discrimination, far exceeding the survey average of 45%.
- Parents and caregivers also face hiring discrimination—14% believe they’ve been denied jobs due to their family responsibilities.
These findings highlight the persistent and widespread nature of workplace discrimination in the UK, reinforcing the need for stronger policies and cultural shifts to create fairer, more inclusive work environments.
